Kids Are Heroes Day
Sep 06, 2008Saturday, September 6
10am – 4pm, Center Court
Recognition Ceremony at 1pm
Kids are heroes, and a local website is recognizing extraordinary kids for their commitment to their communities. Join us as we honor local heroes and help them raise money for the causes that are dear to them. Francis Scott Key Mall will donate $250 to the charity that has the most money raised. All children are invited to become a hero for the day, and join us as we make welcome cards for premature babies and other charitable activities. Enjoy music from Kidsinger Jim and entertainment throughout the day!
Visit www.kidsareheroes.com for inspirational stories about these heroes or to nominate a hero you know.
Participating heroes include:
Julie Lemick – Julia is a 3rd grader at Oakdale Elementary School and her favorite activity is dancing. Julia has donated her birthday gifts to Frederick Food Bank, Labrador Retriever Rescue and Toys for Tots over the last 3 years. She also helped organize a toy drive at Oakdale Elementary School for Toys for Tots last year. She is excited to use this o pportunity to help the Toys for Tots foundation with their 2008 holiday toy drive.
Anna Lemick – Anna is a 1st grader at Oakdale Elementary School. Anna has donated her birthday gifts to Frederick Food Bank and Labrador Retriever Rescue for the last 3 years. She also donated 7 inches of her hair to Locks of Love earlier this year. Anna loves Labs and has 2 of her own. She is excited to help raise money to help LRR provide foster homes, medicine, surgery or anything else that rescued labs may need so they might find their forever home!
Miranda Mossburg – Miranda Mossburg has a special affinity for horses. For her 10th birthday, in lieu of gifts she asked for donations to help repair a barn roof that had been shelter for two of HorseNet Rescue’s older blind horses. Mandy raised more than $400 to help pay for the new roof! Miranda will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk and HorseNet Horse Rescue.
John Sun – John Sun is a healthy and happy 8 year old boy who is committed to raising awareness of premature births (preemies) in our community. As a preemie himself, John is very excited about welcoming preemies with gift bags filled with miniature stuffed animals, hand-knit hats and quilts donated by other dedicated community members. John also has a love of animals and supports local shelters and rescues including Furever Felines and Small Angels Rescue, both in Frederick, MD. John will be collecting donations for Small Angels Rescue, and will also be providing kids with the opportunity to make welcome cards for premature babies.
MaryMargaret O’Neill – MaryMargaret O’Neill is a nine year old girl who loves being involved in her community. In addition to visiting nursing homes with her dad (and Charlie, her 4 year old Bernese Mountain dog), she was recently part of a team that sold lemonade to benefit young cancer victims. In lieu of gifts for her ninth birthday, she asked people to donate to Defenders of Wildlife. She also just happens to be co-founder of kidsareheroes.com. MaryMargaret will be raising donations for Frederick County Animal Shelter. She will also invite kids to help her decorate pet collars with stickers!
